'Remove, Report, and Ban' Post Option for Community Moderators

We're happy to announce that moderators now have better tools to keep their communities healthy and happy with a 'Remove, Report, and Ban' option on community posts. Accessed via the post overflow menu (aka three dots), the option will remove the post and member from the community, report the post to Google for us to look at, and ban the member from joining the community again.

As always, this feature is rolling out to community moderators over the next several hours. Enjoy!

Google Takeout: Hot, Fresh & Made to Order

As we’ve made our way through G+ Settings Tab, and have so far explored all the ways it gives us control over our experience, we came across the Album Archive during our discussion of Photos in G+. That discovery led us to a brief mention of Google Takeout which we’ll dive into a bit here. It’s a worthwhile addition, I promise.

Google Takeout is basically Google’s way of giving you ownership of all the data Google holds which is in some way connected to you. You’re given the option of creating and managing archives of your own data drawn from an incredibly diverse range of products and services provided by our good friends at Alphabet. It’s super simple and takes less time than you might expect. Take a look at the image below and get an idea of the options and the interface.

Now that you’ve selected the different data sources you’d like to archive, all you have to do is hit the next button located at the bottom of the list. The archive created can use three different file formats – including .zip – and allows for a maximum file size to be set. There’s also the all-important delivery method to think about. Your options range from a download link via email to any of the cloud-based storage services. Here’s a view of the options below:

Now all that remains is pressing go and getting all that data into your hands for whatever uses you see fit. It’s good to know that everything you’ve done, all your posts and interactions, your +1’s and Hangouts, your Keep data and Photos, can be saved to your own storage. It gives you a feeling of permanence and ensures that no matter what, your Google experience will always be right at your fingertips – even the experiences from your first days on the platform. In the end, that’s all archiving is anyway – protecting digital memories.

Reshare to Google+ in fewer clicks

As of today, when you hit the share icon on a Google+ post, you'll automatically be taken to a Google+ reshare of the post. Previously, users were given an option between Google+ and other social options. This was done in an effort to reduce the number of clicks it took you to reshare Google+ content on Google+. While there is no longer direct share capability to other social sites, copy/paste from the address bar in your browser still works just fine.

We hope this will make your experience here a little bit more seamless and thanks for the feedback that got us here!

One of the reasons social platforms like Google+ exist is the seemingly endless need people have for sharing and viewing images related to family, friends, and topics they’re interested in. We all do it every day and take differing levels of satisfaction from our ability to quickly see and share all the moments that matter with all those who matter the most to us. It’s new in an online sense, but people have been actively doing this same thing for millennia – just in different forms.

This Settings post isn’t actually about what’s available on this specific help file page though. (https://goo.gl/MEzHJ9) No, instead we’re going to focus on the first little blurb written on the page – directly under the title: To see or delete name tags on photos you’re tagged in, visit the Album Archive, find the photo you want to change, and select Details Information. You can also see anyone else who is tagged in the photo in the Album Archive.

The Album Archive (https://goo.gl/CKi13Q) is something some people may not even know exists. It used to be covered under the Picasa and Picasa Web Albums Help, before they were retired, and has a direct effect on all the users of a wide range of Google’s products – including Google+, Photos (Picasa), Drive, Hangouts, Picasa Web Albums (of course), and Blogger. So, each time you upload a photo to one of those sites – from a phone, tablet, or PC – it’ll be directed to this page.

You have complete control from here over every picture you’ve ever added or been tagged in and can even manage all your photo comments. It really is a great resource for keeping track of another aspect of your online life, so familiarize yourself with all it has to offer. Making the G+1 button load more quickly

The G+1 button is shown billions of times per day on web pages around the world, so it’s important that it load as quickly and efficiently as possible. To make it easier for people to load and share the pages they’re interested in, we’ve created a simpler G+1 button sharing experience.

Beginning in a few weeks, clicking the +1 button will open a streamlined new Google+ sharing dialog, and the G+1 button will no longer display a +1 count. If you’re a publisher, you can rest assured that these +1s do not affect search ranking and the size and layout of the button will remain the same.

These changes will only affect the G+1 button outside of Google+. The +1 button within Google+ will continue to work the same way it always has.

If you’d like to view all of the pages you’ve +1’d over the years, you can download a list using Google Takeout.

We hope this change makes it that much easier to check out and recommend all the interesting things you discover!

Community Management Best Practices - Retaining Moderators For Your Community: How To Keep Them Invested

Introduction

In this article we’re going to talk about community owners and various ways for them to keep their moderators invested within the community and ways that makes it worth continuing to do the job they do that is so very important to each and every community on Google+

There will be ideas of things that I feel might be of use to a community owner or even specific things mentioned by a couple of my own community moderators for the Nova Launcher communities that I’m in charge of here on G+.

Owner vs Moderator: Treat Them All The Same
There is always an owner of a community and then there are moderators of a community in most cases. For me personally as a community owner of two communities for Nova Launcher where I have 3 moderators I don’t separate the two roles.

For me, my moderators are my team members and they work with me, not for me. I treat them as a complete equal to me in every way possible. If they have suggestions or ideas of community settings or something we could change within the community, we discuss it on our Slack channel and then whatever we agree upon, I let them change it or enable/disable it or whatever.

It’s important to make them feel as much as a part of the overall team as possible. When they are able to change little settings like “Hold Posts For Review” or something similar, it gives them a sense of responsibility but it also makes them realize that I as the owner trust them to not mess things up. And that’s definitely how it is because I do trust them. If I didn’t, they wouldn’t be my moderators and someone you don’t trust shouldn’t be your moderator either.

They know and understand things ultimately get discussed with me on any changes within the community, but that’s where me as the owner stops being separated from them as a moderator. We are a team and in our case we are family in a lot of ways. We spend hours and hours talking to each other, and not always just about community related items but about general everyday stuff as well. Again, this gives them comfort and makes them enjoy being a part of everything and in my opinion is one of the reasons why they continue to do what they do when it comes to community moderation.

When They Post On G+, Interact With Them On Their Posts
This is another thing in my opinion as it shows your moderators that you care about them beyond just the community, their duties within the community and similar things.

When they see you interacting with them on posts outside of the community, they get a sense that you care, and you should. These guys and girls are the ones that help keep our communities running as smoothly as possible and without them, where would we be?

They make an everyday general post on G+ outside of the community and you share it, hit that +1 button and then interact via a comment, they know you’re there for more than just their moderator abilities. Again, this hopefully makes them appreciate you more and to want to continue to come back and do the their moderator duties for your community.

Have Fun With Them Outside Of G+
For myself and my moderators, we have a Slack channel where myself, the Nova Launcher developer, our graphics guy and of course the moderators themselves hang out and talk. We have separate chat channels for mod stuff only but we have a #General channel where day to day talk happens. This is where we talk about anything and everything, and even at times a bit of moderation type stuff gets discussed here. But more importantly it’s a place for all of us, but especially them, to wind down, express themselves, talk about the things they enjoy, post a news link they have read and found interesting or whatever else.

This lets them unwind from the moderation duties. As we all should know, moderating can be a stressful job at times and there are times that unwinding and just relaxing and getting away from the “work day” is important and much needed.

Their Opinions Matter, So Let’s Ask Them
As I stated early on I would also be including some information directly from my mods as to what keeps them motivated to want to come back and do this every day.

Ivan Staines provided his thoughts below:
1. We all get on together as a team. To me that's the most important thing.
2. This is never boring, there's always something new or different to get our teeth into.
3. Being able to help newer users who frankly don't have a clue about Nova and what Nova can / can't do is always a little rewarding.
4. I think having a team of mods from all over the place is a good thing as we have such diverse and different cultures and time zones to deal with issues.
5. There's always someone around to help users.

Stephan Schwöbel provided his thoughts below:
1. Broadening my knowledge
2. Applying knowledge to help other members
3. Being part of an international community
4. Meeting the challenges of repetitive questions
5. Developing, pertaining and delivering a communication culture
6. Being there for those who seek help
7. Having fun to work with a muti-cultural moderating team

Conclusion And Final Thoughts
This list of things I’ve mentioned are just a small part of many things you can do to keep your moderators interested in the community and for them to keep coming back. As you can see from a couple of my moderators themselves, they share some of the same opinions and ideas of what it means to be a moderator and what it takes for them to remain invested into the community to continue doing what they do each and every day.

Again, without our moderators we would be in a world of hurt and would have even more things to have to deal with on a daily basis than what we already have and that can often lead the downfall of a community once it were to get to grow to a certain size and we as a single person couldn’t handle it.

Treat them like family and interact with them as well as show them that you truly do appreciate them. Appreciation goes a very long way with most people and chances are it will go even further with your moderators.

Don’t always sit and talk business and all about the community. Have normal everyday conversations with them and show them they are more than just someone who is “working for you” by helping you keep a community clean and organized and I assure you they will stick around.

One final thing I'd like to add as some hopeful inspiration. I took the picture below while in Las Vegas in January 2017 and this picture states something to me with regards to this very topic of conversation. What it says to me is that you want to reach for the highest platform possible when it comes to communicating, dealing with and encouraging your fellow employees, moderators or whatever. No platform is too high to achieve if you put your mind to it.

How does that go along with this picture you ask? For me, I look at it as this. If I can make it as high as that building top then just a couple more steps is the moon and right beyond that is the sky that we all know is unlimited.

Treat your people with respect and appreciate them at all costs. With that you and them both will be successful and likely achieve a lot of things within your community.

Highlights of the G+ Help File’s Settings Tab - Setting Country and Age Restrictions

One of the first things I do whenever I pick up a new piece of technology, or use a new software product, is go directly to the Settings to see exactly what I can and can’t control. You can often pick up on a great many things you didn’t know by simply browsing the titles of options available to you, and learn even more by playing around with the different ways you can impact your experience. No matter what you’re using, if it’s plugged in and has a screen, it will have a Settings feature. It’s one of the universal functions found in the modern world and that’s a good thing for users.

Last week, we covered Accessibility where you can control ease-of-use and other features aimed at helping all users enjoy their experience. This week, we’re going to skip past Edit Your Profile as we’ve already covered it thoroughly in our previous series and focus on an area many probably didn’t know existed – Setting Country and Age Restrictions for G+ Profile and Content. There are quite a few ways here that you can use to customize your profile and restrict access.

The first choice you have here is to Restrict Access by Age or Location. When you open the tab, you’re given control over the age of your audience: anyone, a custom age, over 18, or a specific minimum age anyone worldwide must be to see your posts. You can also restrict access to your profile by anyone in a specific country. I’m not sure why anyone would really do this, but the option is there if you so choose to use it. Any settings you adjust can be readjusted later, so you’re not setting anything in stone and can feel comfortable making changes.

The next tab gives you information about what restricted users can and cannot see regarding your profile. There’s some useful stuff here and it’s probably worth your time, if thinking of using restrictions, to read over what’s here to familiarize yourself with the process and its results. The next tab is just a simple message about regulated goods like tobacco and alcohol. Obviously, these are a no-no in G+ and anywhere else on Google, so steer clear if you don’t want to have your account suspended. The last tab is Google’s way of saying they can enforce their own restrictions for legal and policy concerns, but we all knew that already, I think. After all, it’s their party and we’re all just guests.

Community Management Best Practices: 3 easy steps to Achieve Immortality for you and your Community

The Foodies+ community has grown and grown over the last 4 years and is one of the most popular communities on Google+. Not quite immortality, but getting there.

Here’s a rundown on how we do it:

1. Hold regular themed events that encourage every member to participate. We’ve had:
· Themed Months – Healthy, Croatian, Tapas, Breakfasts, etc

· Weekly Hashtags – #JapaneseWednesday, #FrenchFriday

· Topical/Festive – Christmas, Chinese New Year, etc.

· Random Topics with catchy titles - Zing & Zany, Reigning Rice, Oodles of Noodles

The whole campaign is led by one member, who writes an introductory post, introducing the topic with any background information. This topic curator would have previously sounded out a handful of members. As soon as the introductory post goes live, the rest of the members are free to post relevant recipes related to the chosen topic. This continues for the rest of the month.

These regular campaigns inject an awesome rush of activity into the community, encouraging conversations that very often continue into the night.

2. Don’t just rely on the Mods
One of the things to note here is that Foodies+ views these regular themes as a way of promoting its members. Past topics have been curated not just by moderators but by valued members who not only post regularly but also spend a lot of their time talking to each other within the community, which is the foundation of our success.

3. Encourage all members to reshare each other’s posts with the public.
This not only promotes the members, but the community as well and has in turn, attracted good quality new members.

Taking the collaboration one step further, we also organise a non-virtual cookie swap amongst our members at Christmas and, more recently, we published our very first cookbook, for charity.
So there you have it. Immortality in 3 easy steps (with a little author’s licence). Now take action and see your community join the gods. Use your own imagination to come up with similar projects – better still, ask your members!
