Hello, everyone.
I learned of this community through my participation in the Ronnie Bincer's Hangout Master group. I am hoping to set up a HOA practice group on Thursday nights -- to serve as an opportunity to learn from each other and get used to running HOAs. I look forward to learning from you and doing what I can to contribute to others' understanding of running HOAs.
Hi David Dierksheide learning from the Hangout Mastery is fantastic. I was just in the membership site today reviewing things I'd learned but wanted to perfect. How much experience do you have with hangouts? Beginner or a bit more advanced? Just wondering where you are and what you'd like to work on - hosting, comment tracker, film strip guest, or everything hangouts? Welcome to U2U group.
ReplyDeleteHello, Sheila.
ReplyDeleteI feel fairly proficient with HOA -- not a beginner -- though I have not independently led a non-practice HOA. I am principally interested in learning about hosting, but to do so I believe that I need to practice being a guest as well, since I plan to run some shows that invite guests, some of whom have not used Hangouts before. I would like to practice running HOAs with others to make it feel routine and to make sure that I really understand all the quirks of Hangouts, such as how to set up the Comment Tracker to pull from all sources.
Thanks for reaching out.
Totally understand your direction David Dierksheide and that's a good plan. I'm about at the same point. Would be happy to join you for a practice session but suggest we have a more experienced person to guide us. Pinging Michael Daniels and Andrew Hatchett These two (leaders and very smart plus good folks) have set times each day in the community when you can log in and get mountains of info and practice in all areas of hangouts plus answer your questions. Check out the links and times in the categories on left side of the community. It took me weeks to hit the link and found the help that was there all along so don't wait.
ReplyDeleteWhen you're ready, you can set up a hangout with me and Rayne Dowell - she's learning too - plus any number of others that will join and put you through the tactics of the host seat until you get comfortable. Next question: what's your time table? Urgent or you can take your time? I have one more idea based on your answer. :-) Will respond back to your answer tomorrow. Headed for sleep as it's been a long day. Speak soon.
Thanks Rayne Dowell I sure would! What would the time zone be for the hangout?
ReplyDelete9PM Eastern=2 am UK or 3AM UK - forget which.
ReplyDelete9PM Eastern, as Andrew mentioned, is the time I have in mind. That's 3AM GMT.
ReplyDeleteWith regard to my timetable, I would like to take the months of July and August to build experience with HOAs -- leading them and participating in them.
Pulling in Sandy Barnett Judi McDowell and Lily Seo who each expressed interest in participating in response to my post in the general discussion.
ReplyDeleteI am very flexible regarding approach. The overall idea of forming this practice group is to learn from each other, experience some of the things that inevitably go wrong in HOAs, and make running them feel a bit routine. No doubt there can be no substitute for experience.
My proposal is that each week we would first share anything new we have learned and then group members would rotate initiating an HOA with the other members serving as guests. Each week's HOA leaders would set up a SHOAE ahead of time, and we would close out and re-enter hangouts as appropriate in order to practice running through all the steps with each HOA leader.
I apologize for being offline today. Work got in the way unfortunately.
Sounds like a plan David Dierksheide Why don't you start the first and we can all respond as guests would normally. Send out the invites and we'll accept as available. Are you looking at Thurs the 3rd at 9 Eastern/8 Central?
ReplyDeletePing: Rayne Dowell Sandy Barnett Lily Seo Judi McDowell Michael Daniels Andrew Hatchett
Totally understand about work getting in the way of online communications. :-)
Very good, Sheila Hensley Rayne Dowell. I considered, perhaps, that this week anyone interested could meet in a regular HO at 9PM Eastern Thursday to discuss how this would work and where people stand in terms of knowledge. If doing that, I'll just set up an HO event, pinging all those above.
ReplyDeleteBut if people would like to actually go to a "Green Room" at 9PM Thursday, I will send out a general event invite to get it on people's calendars and to see who can participate -- and will then set up a SHOAE into which I will invite participants at 9PM on Thursday. (Although I suppose I could just set up an unlisted SHOAE and only ping the people above to check availability. Would that work?)
My first thought is this...
ReplyDeleteIf the recorded videos are made private and a new member joins, then anyone who has ever hosted a video will have to go back and add the new members name to every individual video so new members could see past videos; and to me, knowing human nature, that seems simply unrealistic. Why should the videos be private?
In User2User we rarely record any of the "help" sessions unless it is some type of presentation being done on a particular feature/subject. One reason is because they tend to be far ranging and cover multiple subjects.
My suggestion...
1). Hosts should share their public event to the "Members Hosted HOAs" at the time of creation
2). If videos are recorded they should be and remain Public.
3). I'd recommend getting the basics down pat before trying to add comment tracker to the mix. In other words, learn to do a HOA alone without a 'wingman' first - because someday you may have to. Wingmen and Comment Tracker certainly can contribute to the success of an HOA - but they are not necessarily needed for a sucessful HOA.
To Sheila Hensley David Dierksheide Rayne Dowell Andrew Hatchett Sandy Barnett and anyone else if I left them out. How about i create a SHOAE for Thursday and invite the public (this is the only way you can do comment tracker) and then I can walk you through how to set one up. All of you would set one up for our next session. I do these every week for my shows. I can tell you how and why you do them a certain way. I can then go over anything while guiding you through the process.
ReplyDeleteJust let me know and I will gladly do this for the community.
Rayne Dowell I'll just say this... Michael Daniels is my goto man when I have questions! ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Michael Daniels , for your offer. Having you lead this Thursday's meeting would be excellent.
ReplyDeletePlease let me know if I can help.
I will share with you the circle I created with all the names from above-- minus mine, of course.
David Dierksheide and now you see why I pinged Michael Daniels and Andrew Hatchett in my first reply. Having an experienced, knowledge host to tell you the "why" is the right, first step for you/us..
ReplyDeleteYou da man, Michael Daniels
Andrew Hatchett's answer was golden, thank you sir. I concur totally. However David wants some action and working as Michael Daniels suggests will give him all he needs to move forward. I'm in and I know you are too, thanks.
What a great community!
Sorry I won't be able to take part after all Rayne Dowell with it being in the middle of the night here, but would love to be included if anyone wants to do this at a UK friendly time.
ReplyDeleteYES, rather than inviting just this circle that David Dierksheide suggested, I will invite the community and pubic. I will invite maybe these folks in the filmstrip
ReplyDeleteI just can't. I can't even get in with Andrew each day like I want to
ReplyDeleteThere is at least one group of UK people who are organizing and offering weekly or monthly hangouts. Kath Dawson or Peter Lunn can give more details about it.
ReplyDeleteHopefully some of us can help get some other groups started based on the initial help from Michael and Andrew. Rayne Dowell Michael Daniels Andrew Hatchett Sheila Hensley
ReplyDeleteWhat a great attitude David Dierksheide The reason U2U exist is the help others. If we start a trend, I think it would be fabulous. Especially us helping new members. We could all be helped by that. Practicing and teaching and learning all in one community. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteJulie Pell just responding to Andrew Hatchett's ping about UK people organising and offering weekly or monthly hangouts. Kath Dawson and I have recently begun The Great British Hangout and whilst it hasn't been a regular HOA show to date, we are in the process of making it regular and putting together some sort of a programme. But if you wanted to just be able to Hangout some time, even a private HOA or just a regular video hangout, I'm sure we can arrange something some time to help you. In fact, I think there were 2 or 3 people that asked for an opportunity to learn after our latest HOA, so maybe we can bring a few together in an HOA.
ReplyDeleteThank you Peter Lunn yes, I would definitely be interested in some HOA practice - need to shake those nerves away! Look forward to any suggestions.
ReplyDeleteOK Julie Pell, Kath is on holiday at the moment but I have pinged her to mention this. We will try to sort something out.
ReplyDeleteThanks Peter Lunn!
ReplyDeleteJulie Pell I'm back and just catching up with lots notifications. I'd be delighted to a an informal hangout with you if you want to have a play about with it and just say hello. It would be lovely to 'meet' you too. Early days I found hangouts quite intimidating and I had no clue what I was doing. You get the hang of it pretty quick once you know a few bits and bobs. Just ping me when you are about. I'm around quite a lot (when not on hols) lol
ReplyDeleteThank you Kath Dawson and hope you had a great holiday! Looking forward to hanging out with you sometime soon when you have caught up a bit The trouble with going away is that everything just piles up while you are away doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteJulie Pell it is a little piled up but that serves me right for not working while away, but it was worth it!
ReplyDeleteHello, everyone. I just shared a post in the community following up on the problem I had joining our 3 July HOA practice session. Please take a look at the post and let me know if you have any ideas. Michael Daniels Andrew Hatchett Sheila Hensley
ReplyDeleteHi David Dierksheide can't find the post you mentioned but I will. Sorry but leaving for the day and will get back to you later. So glad to hear from you.
ReplyDeleteMy HOA problem solved. With my apologies to those who seeing this again....
ReplyDeleteIt turns out that the I was having was that I still had the "poonvis" extension loaded in Chrome on the desktops. I had forgotten that I had it because I had only been launching test HOAs from those computers, and having the extension loaded never affected my ability to launch an HOA or HVC.
As soon as the extension was deleted, everything worked fine.
If only I had gone straight over to look at the extensions.... Actually what caused me to do it was that I switched to Firefox and suddenly things worked properly. So I knew that the problem was somehow associated with the browser.
I couldn't be happier for you David Dierksheide. No apology necessary. Have no idea what the "poonvis" extension is, but I do know I'll stay away from it. So, I learned from you. Sorry you had the trouble but it does sound like you're back on track. Excellent!
ReplyDeleteSheila Hensley The poonvis extension mahe filmstrip appear at the top of one's Hangout window. A nice way to keep your eyes closer to the direction of your camera. After one of the HO updates, the poonvis extension started to conflict with Hangouts. Turns out, at least in my case, that it only conflicted in one direction. I forgot it was even loaded.
ReplyDeleteAh, have heard of that possibility through Ronnie Bincer but didn't think it was available yet. Thanks, for explaining. You saved me from researching the term. I appreciate that.
ReplyDeleteDavid Dierksheide glad you discovered the issue here. I'm poking around comments, and am hoping you also updated the post in the Hangout Mastery community so others can learn from what you discovered.
