Members of my charity have suggested I promote the direct link to our weekly Hang Out. Do I have to create an event first or just go directly to schedule a hang out and promote the link generated from the hang out scheduling?
Terrific Tonya Heathco You can do either/both. It depends on what type of promotion you do, post on a blog, website, in a community, newsletter, etc. I've done both and don't notice a big difference in response - but some sort of graphic helps :)
Sally Sue Ember Exactly how are you setting up the events? Are you starting them on the Google + Side and starting a SHOAE (Scheduled Hangout On Air Event) Are youTube side and starting a YouTube Live Event?
Details of the step by step process you are using can help us help you.
Sally Sue Ember You said... "I start on G+ and create an Event for the SHOA to start "later" and provide the date and starting time/duration."
There is no need to create an event if you are using the SHOAE to schedule your HOA..
Check out this post by Ronnie Bincer . I'm sure it will clear up any confusion between the SHOAE and the traditional method (Create event, find YouTube Link, paste into Event, etc). SHOAE is MUCH easier.
If you really want to learn about Hangouts you need to join Ronnie Bincer's Hangout Mastery Community for teh latest and greatest on Hangouts.
Sally Sue Ember if you use the Hangouts menu and then press the blue button to "start a hangout on air"... you're actually going to setup a Scheduled HOA Event which can be live "later"... when later arrives, you should return to the event you created (not the hangouts page again) to start up the broadcasting interface. You get there at show time by using the "Events" menu. You can share that Event's URL with others as a promotional link as well (just after you first create the Scheduled HOA Event).
Plus here is a post I made for best practices for starting a HOA since Feb 2014 http://goo.gl/xKxFQq
