To me, this looks like Google is merely acknowledging something we've all known for a while... it is a conglomerate with several diverse business interests that are not part of Google's core business. As a business move this makes perfect sense to me.. Will it re-fuel the "Google+ is dead" stories - undoubtedly. Will those stories be factual? - Probably not. Will I care? In a word-No. I use Google and several of its products - do I care if they change the product name...not as long as I continue to have access to the functionality.
