Has anyone tried to join a Hangout on Air from a mobile device lately?

Has anyone tried to join a Hangout on Air from a mobile device lately? I just had a future guest try this using a link to the Green Room. When he clicked the link it just goes to the Google Play Store and shows the Hangout App. I tried on my own phone an it does the same thing. I know this worked a few months ago but I hadn't tried it since.

  1. I haven't but it would be a good thing to find out.

  2. Gary Solomon all i know is you can't start a HOA with a mobile device. And bandwidth plays a part in joining in one. I have no answer for why the playstore would come into it if both have a google account.

  3. Richard Clarkson that's right. We've never been able to start a Hangout on Air on mobile but until very recently a person could join one by clicking a link to the session. Now that seems to be no longer possible.

  4. Greetings Gary Solomon, Richard Clarkson and friends. I tested a green link a couple minutes ago to an event pre-live, and it worked fine. I accessed the link (on my Android phone...) via a Hangouts Chat message post. It does work. We can double check the G.R. link, test it, and the monitor how it is being sent. Environmental issues aside, the concept itself does the job. :)

  5. Incidentally, I acknowledged that the version of Hangouts is only from the new version, as the "controls" and manipulating extensions do not function in mobile. Hence mobile users can join, but I have not experienced multiple users from mobile in a HOA. The admin may be required to mute or white screen, and the mobile user probably cannot share screen or post "internal" messages.

  6. Roland Takaoka thank you very much for giving this a try. Perhaps I just ran into a glitch with Google yesterday when trying this with my guest. I understand the mobile guest has limited functionality while in the Hangout but all I care about is their ability to appear and have decent audio. The capability of doing remote impromptu interviews via mobile has been a very valuable feature of Hangouts for my show. I will do more testing today and see what I can discover. Thanks again, Roland. I really appreciate what you are doing to push the Hangout feature set forward with your shows.

  7. ...and an update. I tried to join with my cellphone and had one of my panelists do the same this morning. It WORKS!!! So yesterday was apparently just another Google Glitch. There is no doubt that working with these Google products is like shooting at a moving target. That is what makes this community so valuable for those of us who do so on a daily basis. Thanks U2U community!!!

  8. Actually you can start a hangout on air from your phone. The key is Gary Solomon you have to have your phone set in chrome. So when you click the link, RIGHT AWAY you must click the menu 3 dots in the top right (or 3 lines) then you have to click it again and choose "request desktop" ( or something like that)
Then it will allow you to go right into a hangout on air.

On a side note... I have not tried to start an HOA from the YouTube side this way. I will test it and get back to you.

  11. Michael Daniels I actually have used that technique to start a HOA but its been quite a while and I really have no need to do that. I do however routinely have guests come on to my show via mobile for live remotes, etc. I'm now convinced that it was another Google glitch that I experienced yesterday. When my guest was getting sent to the Google Play Store email he clicked on the Green room link I was sure he just didn't know what he was doing and was clicking the wrong link or something. I then used my own Android phone to click on my own link and dang if it didn't go directly to the Past Store! This happen repeatedly to me as well. This morning I had one of my panelists do a test and he came right into the session. I tried my phone and it worked perfectly.

I just wonder if this is tied into the sign in glitches and others seen over this past week.

  12. Michael Daniels I looked at your youtube video and all it shows was your avitar on a black streen. i could hear you but that was all. I wasn't aware you could do a HOA with a mobile and have no idea how to start one from the youtube side.

  13. Richard Clarkson I think Michael had his camera turned off on that test vid. As far as appearing in the filmstrip of an HOA started from YouTube it works fine now. The process is the same as joining from a computer. Just click on the link sent by the host.
