Another great post from Spencer Wade.

G+: Creating a Custom Stream

If there were one thing I would do differently when starting my G+ profile, I would have taken the time to organize my Stream in a more meaningful manner. I’ve taken time over the years to rectify my oversight, but it’s been far more time-consuming and frustrating than it would have been when everything was fresh and new – and my followers were fewer.

Google did a great job from the beginning with giving users new and exciting ways to organize their connections into logical, useful groupings. They understood the need for granulation when designing the systems, and improved on this with the release of the new G+ - though some may argue that point. One thing that’s inarguable, though, is the usefulness of customizing your Circles and the frequency with which their posts fill your Stream.

By clicking on the People Tab on the left and selecting Following, you can access the Circles you’ve created to group your friends and family together. Just click on the Dots in the left corner and you’re able to change the Circle’s settings. Now, you can finally control the posts from your cousin who loves aliens, or ensure you never miss a post from your best friend from school. You have total control to customize your Home Stream to your heart’s content. Plus, no one will be the wiser.

There are innumerable ways to granulate your Circles even further. All it takes is a little experimentation and some exploration. Once you’ve used the platform for a while, you’ll come to know the things you look for and those you scroll past. Customizing your Stream to do this for you is simply the next logical step, so take some time to set yours up. I guarantee it’ll be time well-spent.
