I would like to share an experience with you guys that points out the need to do proper prep work

I would like to share an experience with you guys that points out the need to do proper prep work

I had a SHOA all set to go last evening and my guest encountered a wave of technical issues culminating in their camera not working at all.

After 20 minutes of trying most of what I knew how to do I gave up and canceled the SHOA

My guest has in been in a SHOA once before and I assumed...... and you know what happens when you assume............. that everything was working properly on both ends.

I should have set some time aside the day before and made sure everything was working as it should

I'm sharing this because maybe someone will read it and say "Good idea!!"

BTW Thanks Andrew Hatchett Michael Daniels Sheila Hensley for all your hard work in User2User especially in the training area. While I was a bit perplexed last night I didnt freak out. Just went through all of the steps you guys taught me.

(Ishoulda practiced ahead of time though)

  1. I know how you feel John Jurkiewicz sometimes things happen that just can not be explained.  It's what you do with the experience that makes a difference the next time.  You're a great guy to share your experience with us.  Reminds us all that it can happen to any of us.  Thanks for the shout-out!

  2. John Jurkiewicz Sorry I wasn't around to help. I don't know about practicing the day before but having the guests in the green room a minimum of 20-30 minutes before broadcast time is certainly a good idea as that allows time to take care of most tech problems that may arise.

  3. great idea John Jurkiewicz  and I will say this - with all the updates my computer and browsers have had the last SEVERAL weeks have been touch and go with my hardware.
What I have found (and it is yet another reason to echo your thoughts here) is that if I unplug my hardware and then plug it back it - it works again.  Just needed to be interfaced with the computer after all the updates.
Just a thought, not saying it would have been the answer, but just in case another has the same problem.

  4. We were there close to 30 minutes prior Andrew Hatchett . My guest kept getting a message to install a plug in and when they did it gave them the same message. The camera issue said the camera was not authorized. In total we fooled with this for close to an hour, lol. I had her reboot, reinstall chrome, etc. I dunno it may have been a gremlin or possible a troll

  5. John Jurkiewicz -- That's just a silly idea! Checking a day before - who does that???? Nobody, that's who! Just do like I always do and blame sunspot activity, solar flares and/or Coronal Mass Ejections. (Or Google...) Then at least one sounds consistent, and the client is not given the impression that you think they are a total idiot (or buffoon). Blame-deflection sounds like the best approach to me. If you want to practice, ping me anytime. I am happy to help! :-)

  10. I had a situation last weekend in which my private HO guest couldn't get her audio to work for her camera without installing more software or an update, restarting, re-entering the HO. Then, all worked well. Luckily we weren't on any set schedule. But, why would video work and not audio when it was an all-in-one webcam?

  11. Sally Sue Ember That is entirely perplexing - the driver packages are usually installed together for such webcams. Eerie!

  12. We were in the middle of our GameShow (Who's in My Line?) when I totally lost power. 5 minutes later I get a text message that my local power company had a "planned outage" in our area. Good thing the Host of the HOA and I have a communications Back Up plan, just in case. We EXPECT something to happen. just don't know WHERE, but it will happen
