Was wondering if I could get a volunteer or 2 to do a practice HOA from 5:30 PM to 5:45 PM Eastern today (Fri July 17th). A friend mailed me a nice mic (Audio Technica I think) and that's just one thing I'd like to test.
I feel like I want to show the guests screenshots of the join process. Thus far I've only told them that the interface will ask them "to agree" with a tickbox and they usually need to scroll or swipe downward to even see the tickbox, but it would be so much easier to just show them visuals of that. Does that exist somewhere? :)
Let me tell you the short story of why the friend mailed me the mic. I got him a job at Inbound dot org. It's a good relationship now. He was on cloud 9. Well, I should say he "got" the job himself, with his credentials, but I made the intro.
If you are using Windows 7/8 you can use the native "Snipping Tool" to take screenshots (or the screen shot tool of your choice) while you are logging into an HOA. Annotate and compile into an animated gif and send via email or post on your blog or page. To your question - yes, probably does exist somewhere but doing it yourself gives it a personal touch that your audience may appreciate.
Thanks all - I uninstalled Dropbox and I'm not sad. I rarely used it anyway, and thanks to you, I'm now aware of Dropbox's sync's negative potential on a HOA's smoothness. I couldn't figure out how to pause the sync, so I said to hell with it and now it's gone from my laptop.
Turned out pretty well considering the hardware hi-jinx. If that happens again, Maybe pin your non-phone feed for better video of you when you are talking.
I had planned to practice pinning for at least 15 minutes. I never got around to it and it hurt me. I tried to pin on the fly but was afraid of "closing out" the HOA by accident. I said to hell with it - but pinning really was the # 1 thing I wanted to practice. Prior to the HOA I didn't manage my day well and so the start time snuck up on me really really quickly.
Alex H Yong It was a great first HOA. You will always be your own worst critic. None of your issues were distracting to me as an audience member and minor issues will quickly become second nature. Congratulations for jumping in feet first, getting started is the hardest part and I'm sure it will be easier and easier each time going forward.
Y'know what Lon McClure, Roxanne made the same suggestion re: pinning the non-phone feed. Even if I knew how to pin, it's a smart move I wouldn't have thunk of on the fly
One good thing - Google did a remarkable job sensing who was speaking and even panning to non-speakers at the right moment it seemed. Uncanny, but I appreciated the artificial intelligence.
Another strange thing: It wasn't meant to be a showcase hangout, but it turned out to be. Very odd.
I think one of the guests maybe pressed something because the HOA interface forced me to click on something in the toolbox which I didn't "want" but I had to click it in order to get unstuck. I don't even remember what it was. ....The final (bottom) choice on the toolbox, if I remember correctly.
You'll find that managing your time before and after an HOA is probably the most important skill to hone. You seem very natural and relaxed while broadcasting so I don't think that is an area you will need to put much effort into. Concentrate on preparation, practice using the interface, and followup after the broadcast and I think you'll be fine. Maybe hookup with Meloney Hall and sit in on a Lights, Camera, HOA broadcast or two. Also watch previous Lights, Camera, HOA shows. Great resource.
Count me in Alex H Yong, would love to help.
ReplyDelete+1d to follow post. Not certain yet if I'll be available at that time.

ReplyDeleteGo for it, roxanne davenport . I won't know until close to show-time and I have a less than optimal connection speed currently.
ReplyDeletePlease post near showtime Alex H Yong so others (myself included) can hop in if available.

ReplyDeleteAlex H Yong If I can make it back from my Dr. appt. in time I'd love to help.
ReplyDeleteAlex H Yong The general consensus it to disable anything you don't need for your HOA. Hope this helps
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with Bill Graham . This includes browser extensions.
ReplyDeleteThank you! All extensions have been disabled for now :) I don't know what I'd do without your help
ReplyDeleteAlex H Yong Just checking to see how your practice session went. I got back home too late to help.
ReplyDeleteI, too , was unable to make it. How'd it go?
ReplyDeleteKudos for having a backup plan! I guess you've figured out that testing of new hardware or software is always a great idea. Watching your HOA now.

ReplyDeleteThank you Lon McClure
ReplyDeleteGoogle should make keyboard shortcuts for pinning. Like 1, 2, 3, matching up with the filmstrip
