New Google+ Tip: Creating Private Posts in the New Google+

Creating private post in the new Google+ is both clumsy and non-intuitive -- but it can be done. In this post, I'm going to cover the basic way but then show you a much better solution which makes it easier and offers the side benefit of making it easy to locate your private posts. (The picture below gives a hint about the second method.)

Basic way of creating private posts
1. +Mention The person or people you want to share the post with.
2. Click the audience at the top of the post.
3. Select See more at the bottom of the first pop-up. The second pop-up will just names of the people you want to address it to at the top.
4. Click _ Done _.
5. Compose and send your post.

A better solution for private posts
Create a collection shared with only you named "Private" or whatever you want it to be called. (You only do this once,)

When you want to share a private post, simply share it with your "Private" collection (or whatever you called it) and +mention the people you want to share the post with.

They will see the post as "Shared privately" (not "Shared with only you" even if you +mention only one person). The collection name will be hidden because you did not share the collection with them.

The side benefit of this approach is that you can see all of your private posts instantly by opening the collection. To make finding specific types of private posts (e.g., posts shared with family vs general personal posts, etc.) even easier, you can create multiple private collections.
