Hi Andrew Hatchett
Hi Andrew Hatchett,
I am wondering if you have run into this, too: My guests cannot pull up the Hangout Toolbox becuase they cannot find it. The do NOT have the 3 little dots under the icons of the left-side icons of the Hangout window and when I have it already activated and re-activate it, they don't get the message to click quickly.
Is there an easy way to have them get the toolbox?
Thanks
Heidi

Community Management Best Practices: Promoting your Community with Pages and Collections
_This post was written by Community Vanguards member John Chvatal _
A Google+ Page used in conjunction with Collections is a great way of bringing more value to members of a Community. People love it when they are recognized for their contributions to a Community. The added benefit is it encourages people to put extra time and effort into the contributions they make to a Community.
A major difference between a Page and a Profile is that Pages can have multiple managers. Community moderators could be made managers of the Page, which allows for tasks to be divided up amongst the moderators of a Community. If you want to have multiple moderators manage an Event, a Page must be used instead of a Profile.
Creating a Google+ Page
Before sharing some examples, you’ll need to create a Google+ page. To create a Page, visit: https://business.google.com/manage/#/pages and click the button in the lower right-hand corner. I suggest you pick “Community” for the “Type of page”. You don’t need to add a website URL. Then, go through the rest of the prompts to create a Page. Don’t forget to add a profile photo, cover photo, and fill out the “About” tab.
Creating a Google+ Collection
Google+ Create member [Dustin Stout or Eli Fennell has a great guide on how to create a Collection:
[https://dustn.tv/google-plus-collections/ or http://elifennell.com/tips-using-google-collections/]
Also, check out the official Google+ Best Practices for Collections guide:
https://plus.google.com/+googleplus/posts/3zBwGASw3LW
Time for some Examples
Before wrapping this up, here are a couple of ideas on how to utilize Google+ Pages and Collections to create more vibrant Communities.
1. A Photography Community could create a Collection to feature one photo a day from a member of the Community.
2. A Community focused more on discussions could create a Collection and share a link to a post that has a particularly interesting discussion. This would in effect boost the visibility of that post.
3. Create a weekly recap or a newsletter for the Community with links to the top posts so members with busy lives can keep up to date on what is happening in the Community.

Google My Account: Deep Diving
Last week, we touched on the importance of Google’s Security Checkup. This discussion centered on the four-step process accessed through the My Account page. While that’s an excellent resource we should all take advantage of regularly, it’s just a small fraction of what you can do with this page. We’re going to briefly go through each section and give you an idea of what you can do there. So, without further ado, let’s get started.
Sign-In & Security
This is the area where you’ll find the Security Checkup we spoke of last week. But, that was just the tip of the iceberg. There’s also an excellent Find Your Phone function that tracks the device you use to access Google. It will tell you where the phone was the last time it touched base, so if you’re on Fi it will know where it is all the time. You can check the ways you sign in, including skipping passwords for simply tapping your phone instead. You’ll see your devices and any security alerts you’ve received, as well as your trusted apps and sites. At the very bottom of the page is a link to your personal privacy settings, too.
Personal Info & Privacy
This page is loaded with everything you need to control your personal information on Google. There is a Privacy Checkup, much like the Security we’ve discussed, and a link to your own My Activity page where you can set activity controls and review your past activity – not to mention a Google Maps Timeline and your Google Dashboard. You can manage your ad settings and control your content, including a download or transfer archive of your Google data. There’s also an Inactive Account Manager setting that allows you to decide what happens to your data if you ever leave Google for good and a Check Your Security Settings link at the very bottom of the page.
Account Preferences
The last big page in your My Account book is Account Preferences. This is where you can check into your data storage settings and decide how you want to interact with Google on certain levels. Your first choice is Language & Input Tools. Here you can change your preferred language across all Google’s products and services. You can also use the Accessibility setting to adapt your Google experience to take full advantage of your assistive technologies. There is a Your Google Drive Storage section where you can upgrade your allocated Google storage if necessary, and, finally, the forgotten and dusty Delete Your Account or Services area.
The End of the Road
The last few areas are pretty much self-explanatory, though they do make for interesting reading. It’s never a bad thing, especially with all the hacking incidents in the news, to be prepared with facts to better understand a possible scenario that affects your data and privacy. Some of the settings here should be more familiar to users than they are, and it might even surprise you to learn some users have no idea the page even exists. So, think of this as a public service to help all new users better understand the whats, hows, and whys of the Google experience. After all, that’s what the entire page is for anyway.
Thanks for stopping by, have a great week!

Community Management Best Practice: Boosting Community Engagement
This post was written by Community Vanguards member and toy photographer Shelly Corbett
Communities are more fun when you have consistent and quality engagement. But how do you create an environment that will foster this type of behavior? Sharing and learning together is one way to accomplish an active and engaged community. In the Toy Photographers community we take engagement seriously; we enjoy learning from each other. No matter how much we think we know about our specific subject, we love to expand and improve our knowledge. Here are a few of the ways that we’ve found to boost engagement in our community:
Have fun!
If you’re having fun, then everyone else will too. To be a successful community owner or moderator you need to be an enthusiastic cheerleader. If you’re excited, then everyone else will be too!
Share your passion!
If you’re enthusiastic about what you’re doing, don’t be surprised when your enthusiasm becomes contagious. If you’re excited about your community, your members will be too!
Quality engagement!
Early on, we made a decision to leave meaningful comments on every post. We want to give our members a reason to post to our community. We learned early on that our members like to be actively engaged.
Share your knowledge and expertise!
If you’re starting a community then you’re probably an expert. Share that knowledge through interesting posts such as “How to”, “Behind the Scenes”, or “Tips and Tricks”. But don’t simply post a link, tell your members why you think they should read what you’re sharing.
Ask questions!
Present open-ended questions designed to engage your members. Invite community members to share their own knowledge and experiences. By doing this you’re showing them they’re valued members of the team. We can all learn from each other.
Lead by example!
Be the type of member you want to have in your community. Moderators and owners are not only there to keep order and enforce the rules; they’re there to contribute, encourage and support.
Hold regular contests!
Nothing engages a community like a contest; everyone likes to show off their best work. The winner could even be your next month's banner photo?
Have fun!
Did I mention this already?
Running a G+ community can be a lot of work. But it can be also be extremely rewarding if you approach it with a sense of fun and joy. I know this is true because I take great pride in the Toy Photographers community that I run with Tony Tulloch aliceincleveland, and Jason Nvrmore. If you like toys and photography, stop by and say ‘Hi!”

Google Security Checkup Time
Security, in all its forms, is important in an uncertain world. Online security, due to the internet’s eternal memory, is even more important. With a rash of cyber-attacks in the headlines, and more and more vulnerabilities uncovered on a daily basis, it’s probably a good time for a security checkup. Thankfully, Google has made the process simple as far as their properties are concerned, so, with just a bit of effort, you can be as secure as possible and that’s always a good thing.
All you have to do is go to the My Account Page and look underneath Sign-In & Security. In case you didn’t know, this is where you can make changes to your account’s settings related to signing in and security – like your activity and recognized devices. Directly under this area is the Security Checkup box. All you have to do is click on Get Started.
Once you enter, the Security Checkup will proceed through four criteria: Recovery Information, Connected Devices, Access for Less Secure Apps, Account Permissions. Each one will present you with a set of data points that you can change, delete, or add to depending on your preferences. You’ll be shown all the devices that have accessed your account and be given the option of removing apps you’re no longer using.
It’s a great way to ensure your up-to-date across the board and make necessary changes in one convenient location.

G+: Creating a Custom Stream
If there were one thing I would do differently when starting my G+ profile, I would have taken the time to organize my Stream in a more meaningful manner. I’ve taken time over the years to rectify my oversight, but it’s been far more time-consuming and frustrating than it would have been when everything was fresh and new – and my followers were fewer.
Google did a great job from the beginning with giving users new and exciting ways to organize their connections into logical, useful groupings. They understood the need for granulation when designing the systems, and improved on this with the release of the new G+ - though some may argue that point. One thing that’s inarguable, though, is the usefulness of customizing your Circles and the frequency with which their posts fill your Stream.
By clicking on the People Tab on the left and selecting Following, you can access the Circles you’ve created to group your friends and family together. Just click on the Dots in the left corner and you’re able to change the Circle’s settings. Now, you can finally control the posts from your cousin who loves aliens, or ensure you never miss a post from your best friend from school. You have total control to customize your Home Stream to your heart’s content. Plus, no one will be the wiser.
There are innumerable ways to granulate your Circles even further. All it takes is a little experimentation and some exploration. Once you’ve used the platform for a while, you’ll come to know the things you look for and those you scroll past. Customizing your Stream to do this for you is simply the next logical step, so take some time to set yours up. I guarantee it’ll be time well-spent.

Invite all the right people to your Communities all at once
Invite all the right people to your Communities all at once
Communities are a great way for groups of people to share around a topic. But when you’re creating a Community for a group you’re a part of, like a book club, parent-teacher association, or work team, the last thing you want to have to do is invite each member one-by-one.
Since so many groups already have a way to get ahold of one another, whether that’s through email, chat, a newsletter or something else, we’ve created a new Community invite link so you can invite all the right people at once.
Community owners and moderators can share an invite link with their group however they choose. People with the link will be able to directly join both private and ask-to-join public Communities, and anyone who doesn’t have a Google account or Google+ profile will be able to create one along the way. Communities that are restricted to a given G Suite organization will continue to only be accessible to members of that organization.
If something changes, you can easily disable a shared link or generate a new one at any time. To share an invite link to your Community, just open the invite menu on Google+ web, turn on the “Allow invites by link” option, and grab the link that appears.

Hello everyone!
Hello everyone!
Fairly new to the Google Hangouts community but the experience has been awesome so far! I still can't get over how friendly and helpful everyone is - THIS is what makes a strong and successful endeavor, no doubt!
Having received awesome help in my first Business Hours meeting and an enormously helpful chat with Michael Daniels, I think I am about 95% ready to go 'live' with the first of hopefully many, many webinars to my online clients. I am still a wee bit shaky on a couple points though and I was wondering if someone or someones would be willing to spend a few minutes role-playing a viewer with me and maybe help iron out a few things I'm not sure about? My webinar is aimed at technology for legal professionals and it is a certification course so I'd like it to be a smooth and professional as possible. I know it will get better as my own skill increase, but any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks again to everyone, Andrew and Michael in particular for guidance and support in helping me get off the ground with everything! Looking forward to being a regular part of the group!
This will be awesome live tech talk and MORE!

Chromebook Mic Question
Andrew Hatchett or anyone else know:
Is there any way to make a chromebook use a USB mic and cancel using the built in mic? Or do I need to buy a mic/headphone single jack like for a cell phone?

Hi, guys.
Hi, guys. I recently signed up for G Suite, and I'd like to move my Business-Hangouts account over to my new G Suite login. I'm not seeing a way to which Google account is linked in my setting on Business Hangouts.
Do you know the best way to make this happen? I thought I'd check here before I email Sean.
Thanks in advance, Muddy

Google+: Finding Your First Communities
One of the difficult, but exciting, aspects of joining a social media platform like Google+ is finding the people you want to be involved with when you’re online. Of course, we all have our families and closest friends that may or may not use the platform. If they do, we’re adding them, of course, and, if not, we might even ask them to join, but that’s no different from any other social media platform, right?
The thing that really makes G+ shine for new users is its Communities. These are the best places for new users to find the people and content they find exciting – not to mention making friends with people who share similar interests. The discover-ability of new and interesting things for first-time users is one of G+’s strengths, so let’s take a look at a few ways to find your first Communities.
Keywords, Keywords, Keywords
Using the search function and the appropriate keyword is one of the most effective ways to locate all of the Communities related to that specific word or words. These keywords can be anything at all that interests you and, more than likely, you’ll find a thriving Community filled with people who care about that topic as much as you do. For example, you input astronomy and get results like these listed below.
Now, all you have to do is look the Communities over to see if any are the right fit for you. One of the first things that jumps out will be the size of the Community since it’s listed right under the name, but numbers aren’t always the best indication of the true substance of a specific Community. Just imagine if there are 40,000 members, which sounds like a thriving Community, but 38,000 are just spammers because the Community is not well-maintained through monitoring and moderation. In fact, a few great members, along with good management, can make a better Community than sheer numbers due to the overall value of what’s being offered. Plus, you’ll have a better chance of becoming a part of something meaningful if you’re just as committed to sharing value as the membership.
The engagement level of the members is probably the most important single thing to look for when discovering your first Communities. You want to join Communities that are actually actively used by the members. Otherwise, it’s just a list of names, so be sure whichever Communities you set your eyes on have an active roster of members who share things you’re interested in. Though, you can always join and “test the waters” to actively see what’s being discussed and shared regularly. If it fits your taste, you’ve found a new place to call your own, and if it’s not then simply keep looking. You’re sure to find something that fits if you’re persistent.
Remember to take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the particular guidelines used in the Communities you join. Some have certain rules they like to follow and no two will be exactly the same, so it’s worth your time to investigate so as not to make mistakes. The biggest rule to follow, no matter where you are in G+, is never, ever be a self-promoter. That’s frowned on everywhere, so do yourself a favor, leave the bragging and spam links at the door. You’re here to make friends, not get banned. If you stick to the topic the Community is based on, you’ll always be welcome and may just get traffic to your own site anyway, and for a much better reason – because you’re viewed as an expert in the Community.
Thanks for stopping by, have a great week!
