Just a Heads Up on what is happening next week

Just a Heads Up on what is happening next week

Due to interest expressed by community members on ChromeBooks/Boxes, I will be holding an HOA (time/date to be determined) using my 2GB Ram Chromebook.

During that HOA I'll show what the picture looks like using 3 different cameras ( Built in webcam, Logitech c525, and Logitech c920). I may even try to show the difference in picture quality using ethernet vs. Wi-Fi.

I'd like to be able to compare the Chromebook against the Chromebox. I am guessing that they will be very close, but looking at your performance experience is with the two.

I do understand that you don't have Camera control on the two Chrome devices, but is that a show stopper?  It might be for me, as I am concerned about what is in the background.

But the performance, over time, is what I am interested in, especially in the HOA or BHOA environment.

    Thank you,

    Russ

  2. Hi Russ,

Comparing my Chromebook to my Chromebox will be a bit difficult due to hardware differences.
My Chromebook runs a 1.4 GHz Intel Celeron  chip with 2 GB Ram.
My Chromebox runs a 2.1GHz Intel Core i7  chip with 8GB Ram.

Needless to say the Chromebox outperforms the Chromebook in all respects.

As to the lack of camera control... No, imho, it is not  a showstopper. With judicious placement of the external camera, what is seen in the background can be managed to a great degree.

Performance over time shouldn't be a problem in either environment [Disclaimer: Other than that caused by new roll outs to the Google environment itself! (grin)]

Figured that. BUT, if I were looking for an HOA "computer", your answer would be the ChromeBox. But, match that up to the cost involved, I might have to make a different choice.

So, overall, both perform well, performance and cost, in the HOA / google environment. And, neither allow for non-google apps to be installed. Do I have that close?

(I am thinking of others you may wish to be involved with your HOA, or watching later.)

    Thank you,

    Russ

  4. Russ,
Costs of Chromeboxes can run  from $100+ to $700+ depending which manufacturer and  what chip set. and how much Ram they have You can get Celerons, i3, i5, and i7.

I'm not sure yet how well my 2GB Chromebook will host a HOA (only used it as a guest in filmstrip so far).  I know Sheila Sheila Strover host HOA on her ChromeBook but uncertain as to how much ram she has in hers.

We'll know a lot more after the upcoming HOA  next week .

  5. I had a brief message from Rayne Dowell earlier in the week asking about Chromebooks. So I am sure she would be interested in this thread.

Dave Webster and Greg Cooper have an interest, too, so just pinging them.

I think it would be useful to everyone involved in HOAs to understand the differences between a Chromebook and a Chromebox, the variations in specification, the advantages and the limitations.

Good idea Andrew Hatchett . You might like to talk about what you do with the Linux, too??

  6. Sheila Strover I'd be happy to talk about Linux...if I knew anything about it. I know that it can be put on Chromebooks.boxes but that is about all I know about it.
