New Options to help People JOIN INTO your Hangout Video Calls
There have always been many ways to Invite People Into your Hangout Filmstrip but lots of people still struggle with helping people enter or join the call.

Perhaps that is why Google just added a few more easy-peasy options to invite people into your Hangout Video Call or Hangout on Air (HOA) filmstrip.

You can now press a Gmail "M" logo or press a G+ logo to have the invitation link automatically included in a Gmail Email message or a Google+ Post respectively... who sees that email or post is up to you.

You'll see these options after using the "Invite People" icon at the top of the video call interface (1) if you are the HOA Host or it is a Hangout Video Call.

There are many ways that the Hangout on Air (HOA) Host can control what the live viewers see and what the recorded video shows for their HOA Broadcasts.

Using the Cameraman App is just one of them, but it is an option that gives HOA Hosts important controls like showing the filmstrip or not and hiding or showing guests at certain times. The Cameraman app is working behind the scenes when you use the highlighted thumbnail menus in the attached screenshot to show or hide guests in the broadcast.

You work hard to make your Hangout on Air (HOA) broadcasts worth watching... why not use them to drive traffic to your website?

People watching videos on your website increases 'time on site' - a good factor to improve your website's ranking. And when visitors stay on your site, there is a better chance they'll look around and find more of the things you want them to find there!

Check out the detailed steps in the linked article for locating the HOA video embed code so you can easily include your HOA videos right on your site. We cover multiple ways to find the embed code no matter which method you used to create your Hangout on Air broadcast.

One Embed Code, 3 Uses
It is the same video embed code that is used to display the pre-show countdown (pictured here) as well as the live broadcast and the recorded version of the show... all depending on when the viewer clicks the play arrow.

I've even shared a little known tip that makes it easier to modify the HOA video embed code for the next video you want added to your site.

HOA Tip... Check your surroundings before joining
When you are invited as a Hangout on Air (HOA) guest there are a couple screens you see before you Join Into a HOA filmstrip.

The first one you see requires you to agree to the terms and conditions of the Hangout on Air... things like you agree you may be broadcast and recorded, etc.

The next screen you'll see after agreeing to the terms is the one pictured here. It has a big Green Join Button so you can enter the HOA interface and interact with the other members of the call inside the HOA interface.

You may not know if the HOA has started broadcasting or not, so it is a good idea to take a moment here and look at what you see around you. Is what you are showing what you want others to see?

You may want to move things around a bit (papers on the desk, drinks on the table, etc.) before you press the Join button. Once you press "Join", your view won't be as focused on you as this screen shows, but if you like, you can pin your own thumbnail to see a similar view again once inside the filmstrip.

Caution for HOA Hosts regarding the HOA Permalink
Recently Google introduced the Hangout Link to Bookmark shown below. It makes sense for sharing it for Hangout Video Calls (HVC), but may cause you trouble if you share it for a Hangout on Air (HOA).

If the Host of a HOA shares the link to that HOA, those that use it can enter into the HOA Interface (aka be a video participant in the filmstrip). However, be warned... there is a possible problem with using that link to enter the HOA filmstrip.

If the filmstrip guest or guests arrive into the HOA interface before the Host and the Host uses the same shared link to enter into the HOA interface, there may not be any green "Start Broadcast" button for the host to press to start the broadcast. That's a pretty big problem to have!

Instead, if the HOA Host enters into the HOA interface via the Blue "Start" button, then there is a much better chance that the "Start Broadcast" button will be there for the host to use... even if some of the guests arrive inside before the host does.

Big Tip: the HOA Host should always use the Blue "Start" button to enter into the HOA when ready to start the broadcast.

Switch Accounts for Hangouts and Hangouts on Air - when joining
A common problem for many people is having too many accounts on Google Plus. This does not fix that situation, but helps you manage it better when invited into a video call...

As pictured in the 3 images below, we have the option now to Switch Accounts before joining a video call (either Hangout Video Call or Hangout on Air).

If someone invites you into a video call and they send the invitation to the wrong account (not your preferred account), you now have the option to switch accounts before joining the call via the "Switch account" link pictured in image number 1 at the bottom of the Join Interface.

This is not used to change from being a "Profile" to being a "Page" but is used if you happen to be invited (and received that invite) into a call and are using the wrong account. You'll see the account invited via the email address displayed below the Join button.

Your best bet is to tell those inviting you which is the proper account to use and potentially try to remove the wrong account from the system, but that is a whole different process and issue to address.

Susan Finch brought this new option to my attention recently. I think it is helpful for people when they are getting invited into video calls frequently with the wrong account. Hopefully that is not you!
