Hi, Brain Trust. My next guest on CHANGES HOA is using Windows XP on a wireless laptop connection. I did a practice with him today and it was awful:
1) the audio had a lot of interference/extra noises
2) every time he moved, there was a blurring
3) the image was blurry even when he stayed still
4) the image and audio were jerky and kept stopping, almost crashing, then resuming
I asked him please to arrange for a wired connection between now and Tuesday and we could test it again (Show is Wed. AM CDT). Will that fix it?
Thanks.
Sally Sue Ember Sounds to me that all the problems are on his end and there isn't much you can do to fix them. While a wired connection may help there is no way to tell for sure what it will/won't cure.
ReplyDeleteFor example...using a laptop with XP indicates an older machine so what chipset, what cameras ( internal or external), what is his bandwidth, how much RAM, etc. All this and more can play a part.
Thanks, Andrew Hatchett. He just bought and installed a Logitech 525 and then the latest Chrome and HOA apps today. Don't know his machinery specs.
ReplyDeleteFor future reference, what are the minimum specs/requirements for a successful GHOA, please, at this point in all the upgrades?
ReplyDeleteI will want to post those and email them to all my future CHANGES conversations between authors HOA guests.
Do I have to eliminate those people as potential guests whose hardware and software aren't up these minimums?
Thanks, Andrew Hatchett and Michael Daniels !
Sally Sue Ember No matter what, if he is running XP then his machine is far too old to be attempting to stream 720p video in two directions. He can PERHAPS lower the slider in the "ramp" icon to the left of the gear in the hangout to force the HOA to a lower resolution (480p would be the most that machine would be able to handle), but the outgoing stream may overwhelm his machine just from the camera itself. That machine is also a huge security risk for you to even be working with him - Microsoft no longer patches security holes in XP and the Chinese hackers and others have surely found exploits by now to take advantage of. I would do this interview using Skype (maybe) or a HOA with the both video cameras turned off.
ReplyDeleteSally Sue Ember You can share a screen window containing a picture of the speaker so that at least there is a photo to reference. You can have two pics - one of each of you - side by side in that window, perhaps.
ReplyDeleteSally Sue Ember Here is what Google says about requirements:
