[ETHERNET ADAPTER FOR CHROMEBOOK?] Really excited to join this group! I've begun "pitching" Hangout-based coverage of live events in the water "space" and will certainly have questions. I just bought a Samsung Chromebook 2 last night, which should, I hope, resolve some of the issues I've had with my old computer (blurry hands, delayed response) with the processor dedicated to G+ and not Windows. One drawback: no ethernet. I'm told the internet is so good I won't need a hardwired connection, but I'd rather not take that risk. I see Amazon sells Ethernet adapters of various sorts (USB 2.0 or 3.0 and 10/100/1000 of RJ45 huh????) - some providing additional USB outlets as well. Any idea which I would need? Has anyone used an Ethernet adapter for hangouts with a computer than has not Ethernet port (e.g. Chromebook, Macbook) - does it make a difference? I didn't think this was the sort of question that warranted a live chat (although I can do that also) - hope it's an appropriate first post to the group?

I considered purchasing this last year when I got my Chromebook.
ReplyDeleteInstead I decided not to use the Chromebook for my professional hangouts. It is just not powerful enough to give a good quality stream, run a good camera nor host with screen sharing and so on.
I am not saying YOU CAN NOT run a hangout on air with the Chromebook, I am just saying I decided it would not work for my demonstration based hangouts.
I use it to do video calls and on occasion join HOAs using it if I need to. I would just never choose to run one.
I look forward to what others have to say regarding the adapter.
and - WELCOME to the community!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your response Heather Kraafter ! What specifically didn't work on the Chromebook when you tried them for HOA? I present to potential clients on Monday, want to know what NOT to try. :-)
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the community WaterCitizen, I use a USB/Ethernet converter on my HPChromebox and will also be using on on my Pixel2 when it arrives. I'd also suggest getting a powered USB hub allow for more USB ports for multiple cameras, headsets, etc.
ReplyDeleteHere is a link to a video I did last year demonstrating the use of a Chromebook with 2@B of Ram to run a HOA.

I hope you ordered the Samsung Chromebook 2 with at least 4GB of RAM.
for my particular Chromebook HP14 - it is Screenshare. When I do that all "hell" breaks loose. I know a few who have no issue. But for me it is a no go.
ReplyDeleteI also find that moving too much as you speak causes a major lag issue. Best to remain still as possible. I have seen that on many people using a Chromebook for their HOAs.
Sound gets kinda jumbled too, at times, but I am guessing that is more of the wireless issue than machine issue.
oh no! Heather Kraafter those are exactly the sort of issues I've had on my main laptop! I think the problems started with that when I switched to Windows 8 (or 8.1, whatever it is).
ReplyDeleteYes Andrew Hatchett the Chromebook I bought is a Chromebook 2 with 4 RAM as well as 16 GB storage, so I just need to make sure that anything I want to show while hosting a HOA is converted to G+ (e.g. turn my PowerPoint into Google Slides) and preferably save onto the Chromebook
ReplyDeleteAnd Andrew Hatchett the HOA you did testing your Chromebook is very helpful - wish I'd found this community ages ago! Unfortunately, the one I got is a Samsung, which you said loses it's camera when I screenshare - that's too bad!
ReplyDeleteWaterCitizen Remember- the model you bought wasn't even on the market when I did my test so I'm sure improvements have been made. When you get it set up we can do a HOA and help you test it. :)
ReplyDeleteYAY! Thanks Andrew Hatchett ! I'm finishing the presentation, hopefully today, and then we can test it out & I can practice at the same time.
ReplyDeleteThis will also be my first time using Google Slides instead of PowerPoint - not sure whether that will improve transition with Screenshare Andrew Hatchett
