Another Hawaii Tech Tuesday live event but for the first time, we steamed it at 1080 via You Tube Live Event, using OBS software to mix three video sources locally and upload to you tube using only 1 machine.  A few glitches but overall we are pleased with the capability.  We used an AverMedia Broadcaster HD to capture VGA video from a pass through connection on the projector in the room.  Our primary (presenter) video was via USB utilizing a Logitech C920.  The in-room Q&A camera was a Canon HV20 video camera capturing images at 1080i which connected to the single host PC via USB3 where an AverMedia ExtremeCap u3 external video capture device completed the video inputs.  Audio captured through our Mackie ProFX 8 mixer which was selected as a mic source within OBS.
Now that we've reduced the number of machines from 3 to 1, our 5 mbps uplink is more than sufficient.  OBS wasn't breathing hard at all.

My iMac is in the shop getting a new logic board. I will be without it for 3 to 5 days! In the meantime, I'm using my MacBook AIR. I purchased an ethernet adapter so that I can host HOAs using a hardwire, but I can't get it to work.  The adapter is lighted (i.e., it appears to be ON), and I have the ethernet cable plugged into it, but no internet connection.

Does anyone have any suggestions?  I'm on a good strong wifi, but it's recommended to be on a hardwire when hosting an HOA and I don't want to risk messing it up.

I have a question about Community based HOAs.  I watched Heather Kraafter and Andrew Hatchett step by step 4 times yesterday thinking I may have missed something.

Here's my question...

When you set up the event within your community, it defaults to the all of the members of your community but you are also supposed to add the public to that event as well, right?   I have tried to add public but the event does not let me make changes to add "public" or anyone else for that matter.

Is there a setting somewhere that needs to be modified to all the public to be added to this event?

I kinda think it's taken long enough & they've made some attempts to get feedback on translation in the past, but not at this level. I am looking at tools that would make it easy to use an HOA to host a 'live' Webinar (since most of my people are NOT on G+).

I've gotten 2 thumbs down reports about Webinar Jam from Hangout mastery community. Is anyone pro Webinar Jam here?

Business Hangouts have nice features but I don't like the black interface,with too much going on for first time viewers and the viewing window gets small once embedded into my website....

Creating a landing page on my website means viewers need to press the play button to start the webinar and then I need to get a chat thread and will have no easy way to know who is watching the broadcast.... 

Any other ideas? I'm starting to wonder if I should go back to Instant Telesummit for the launch and then HOA for group programs.... Kinda disappointing.

I discovered something today I thought I'd share with you.

I discovered something today I thought I'd share with you. I was practicing for my hangout/webinar tomorrow evening and I was making sure the PowerPoint slides I was going to use were aligned correctly by using the Screen Sharing option on the Hangout Tool bar. Here is what I discovered: If you are going to use PowerPoint slides open the presentation and enable the "full screen" option in the lower left hand corner of your presentation. The icon is an open booked titled "reading view." when you click it once it will toggle to full screen view. That way when you screen share you'll be able to see the slides as you utilize them. If you use the Slide Show option you wont be able to see anything but your slides, no comments or anything. Most of you probably already know this but I thought I'd share for those of us who are discovering something new each day

The Comment Tracker collates comments from Google+, YouTube & Twitter to give the Host of the Hangout the opportunity to reply and interact directly with the viewing audience.

The Comment Tracker will be presented in two parts:

Part 1 – comments from the Google+ Event page and from YouTube
Part 2 – comments from Twitter

How to Create Custom Hangout Lower Thirds with iPiccy

If you host or guest on a Google+ Hangout On Air, you’ve probably seen those “newsroom” like bars at the bottom of the screen identifying the person above it.

These bars are referred to as lower thirds. 
Google+ Hangouts has a third party app called the Hangout Toolbox 
This is the number one used Hangout app, which is not surprising due to its simplicity and features such as the ability to upload your brand logo and save your lower thirds as presets.

I've written a detailed article on my NewRayCom blog that includes a short video that shows you how to quickly add a Lower Third using the Hangout Toolbox.

To take advantage of the great branding opportunities that Hangouts provide, I create custom Lower Thirds and Graphics using the free Chrome extension, iPiccy 

There are many free photo editors available for those of us who are Photoshop challenged, but I always find myself going back to iPiccy for its ease of use and number of features.

I've included an album of my screen shots to make it easy for you to scan through. If you need more detail or want to watch the video, go to www.newraycom.com.

1, 2 - Download the iPiccy Chrome extension and "start editing".

3.  Click on the “more” option, then on “new image”.

4. The optimal size for a HD video is 1280px x 720px

5. Make sure your background is transparent. (Then save as a .png file)

6. To create a typical “identification lower third bar”, I choose a rectangular shape after clicking the “shapes” icon.

7. Choose size and colour of banner.Select transparency. I usually around 20% works well. , effect and degree of transparency. I find 20% works well.

8. Import a brand logo or your profile image by clicking on the photo icon next to “add photo”. You can upload one from your computer or choose one that you’ve already uploaded.

9. Add text to your lower third. (or anywhere else inside the view area).  _Be careful your text or graphics don’t hide you. Best to keep them near the outside frame._
I keep graphics within a 200px frame on either side and 150px from the bottom.

10. You can add other images or add text. Again, be careful to allow enough "empty space" in the centre of your frame. 


11. Click on the checkmark and save as a .png file to your hard or Google Drive.

12. Your finished Hangout overlay. Notice all you see are the elements you added. 

13. Open a Hangout and open the Hangout Toolbox. Go down to “custom overlay”, click on the “custom upload” button and upload the .png file you just saved.

14. Turn the custom overlay feature "on" and check to see if it appears. 

15. While leaving the custom overlay “on”, type the name of the file in the “saved presets” field and hit “save”. The file will show up at the bottom of your "presets" and be available when you open a hangout.
(The toolbox has an option to have the last Lower Third you used to automatically appear when you load a new Hangout. (upper right gear wheel - settings)

The saved presets list is a super tool for accessing special promo graphics that you want to use during your hangouts such as call to actions, web links etc..

I learned a few things that you CAN'T DO in an HOA.  In the short video below, one of my primary guests had extremely limited bandwidth.  My intended solution was to include him as a voice-only (telephone) guest.  The Hangout app add on Uber Conference would not load, for some reason, this morning.  Knowing that our video hangout meetings often included telephone participants, I asked our meeting coordinator how she did it.  She said that while in the video hangout, click the Add People button and there will be an option to add a telephone number.  That number is dialed and whomever answers can participate.  This will not work if you initiate the video hangout from a page (as opposed to a profile).  It will also not work if you are doing a Hangout On Air (as opposed to a video hangout.
After three false starts.... (nope that's not going to work, repeat, repeat) we had an interesting discussion about an upcoming robotics competition.

Hi to all the Aussie G+'ers and more especially to those interested;

to ask for a bit of help regarding learning, practicing and doing HOA's and SHOAE's  within or close to the Australian [when I'm awake] timezones. 

My goal is to become proficient in doing a Mobile HOA (Private) of my daughter's wedding at the beginning of November for people in the groom's family who couldn't travel from Ireland to Australia to be a part of the celebrations.
